Sedimentology can be seen as a key discipline that provides essential contributions to research about the problems facing Planet Earth, including energy supplies, water resources and global changes in the environment.
The sedimentology and stratigraphy research group studies surface processes such as erosion and sediment transport and the subsequently formed sediments and their depositional environments.
Several methods of facies and basin analysis, such as quantitative modelling and stratigraphic simulations, form modern research topics.
Strong links to applied fields, for instance, oil and gas explorations and hydrogeology, result from a broad range of special applied methods, including research into diageneses and clay mineralogy, automatic grain-size analysis, 3D structural modelling and isotope stratigraphy.
