Research, teaching and consulting with focus on carbonates, tunneling and geothermal energy

Ronny Boch

Expertise

  • Water-gas-rock-biology-interaction in natural environments and geotechnics
  • Tunneling: drainage, unwanted mineral deposits, microbial processes, material alteration
  • Geothermal energy: thermal waters, scaling, plugging
  • Karst and caves: hydrogeology, paleoclimate
  • Environmental monitoring: sampling strategies, sensors, data loggers
  • Numerical modeling: hydro-/geochemistry
  • Isotope and environmental tracers
  • University teaching and workshops

Current research and consulting

  • Thermal waters, mineral deposits and alteration in geothermal wells of the Pannonian Basin (Hungary): unwanted processes (scaling, plugging, corrosion, biofouling), different aquifers with broad range of thermal fluid production conditions, focus on calcareous scaling, sampling and monitoring strategies, new tracers, evaluation of scale inhibitors, international exchange of experiences

  • Carbonates from Erzberg – environmental information from fracture veins and iron ore: chemical-sedimentary deposits such as “Erzbergite” aragonite-calcite, authigenic dolomite, siderite-ankerite mineralization, “Eisenblüte” excentrique aragonite precipitates, focus on age determination and depositional rates, formation conditions, paleoenvironmental (paleoclimate) context, potential microbial (bacterial) contributions, in-situ monitoring of CaCO3 precipitation and groundwaters

  • Tunnel drainage – optimization of drainage systems and maintenance: water-rock-building material interaction, field testing (e.g. construction alternatives of drainage systems with focus on unwanted mineral and biomass deposition), concepts and application of “green inhibitors” against calcareous deposits based on field-/laboratory tests and numerical modeling, utilization of new monitoring techniques related to deep groundwaters, tunnel-/drainage atmospheres and solid phases (sensors/data loggers, mobile fluorometers, environmental tracers), case studies e.g. Koralmtunnel, Siebergtunnel, Gratkorntunnels, Semmering Tunnel Chain.
