Project Title: Alpine Stress
Project Description:
The project Alpine Stress focuses on the analysis of the current geodynamics in the Alps and their foreland by investigating in-situ stresses and characterizing the active tectonic processes at the leading edge of the Alpine fold and thrust belt.
By analyzing tectonic geomorphology, earthquake data and the recent stresses from boreholes in RAG’s concession in Austria the project therefore addresses to:
- detect active crustal movements from tectonic geomorphology and the dating of faulted Quaternary sediments;
- analyze stress directions, stress magnitudes and stress regimes from the logs of RAG-s boreholes in the study area;
- identify stress coupling or stress partitioning between the geological units of the frontal part of the Alps;
- identify active faults from observation of stress partitioning, the correlation of earthquake hypocenters with fault locations and their geomorphological expressions;
- compile a comprehensive geodynamic model characterizing the current tectonics of the Northern Eastern Alps and their foreland.
