Current Project:

The Middle Triassic palinspastic model of the eastern Northern Calcareous Alps

This dissertation project should describe as far as possible all middle Triassic formations within the eastern Northern Calcareous Alps (approximately between Salzburg in the west and the Vienna Basin in the east) and analyse their lithology, sedimentology, microfacies, biostratigraphy and isotope stratigraphy.
With the help of all these methods a palinspastic model of the austroalpine middle Triassic should be sketched, that means, an analysis of the paleogeography of the individual formations of the Northern Calcareous Alps and their temporal and spatial extension should be demonstrated.
According to various model ideas, two carbonate platform - areas can be assumed in the middle Triassic of the eastern Northern Calcareous Alps, with an basinal deposition area inbetween.
The close relationship between these different depositional areas in space and time and their importance for the middle-Triassic stratigraphy should be a focus of this work.
Subsequently, this model should bring with it a lightening for the knowledge of the tectonic structures of the Northern Calcareous Alps, also in the underground of the Vienna Basin.
In addition, the detailed distinction of a total of six rock formations (Gutenstein-, Annaberg-, Steinalm-, Reifling-, Raming- and Wetterstein limestone) and the analysis of their lithological parameters should also be of practical importance for applied issues (mining and prospection for natural gas, thermal water or karst water).
And another area of research still under development represents the isotope stratigraphy, whose application is also important for underlining chronostratigraphic data of the temporal successions or of the different individual layers as well as their deposition conditions, depending from paleoclimatic and ecologic factors, temperature and salinity of the sea-water, depth of deposition and geographic latitude.
