Current Project:

The Alpine Early Anthropocene – Geochemical studies in minerotrophic and ombrotrophic peatlands to assess regional phases of mining activity in prehistoric times and regional climatic changes in the Eastern Alps (Salzburg, Upper Austria, Styria)  

Airborne particles, released by mining activities and metal production, are archived in ombrotrophic and minerotrophic peatlands.
This transdisciplinary research project aims at achieving a better understanding of the duration and the intensity of mining activities in the Eastern Alps in prehistoric times (Bronze Age –Iron Age) by conducting (bio)geochemical  (ICP-MS, ICP-OES, XRD, XRF, SEM, FTI) and palnyological analyses of peat material of different locations.
During the Bronze Age, the Mitterberg region (Salzburg) and the Palten valley (Styria) were centres of copper production in Europe. Bronze Age metal casting processes, associated with intense salt mining, are known from the Hallstatt High Valley (Upper Austria).
This study will allow a more detailed picture of the chronological, technological and sociocultural evolvement of early societies in the prehistoric Eastern Alps by comparing geochemical traces of past anthropogenic activities.
Furthermore, the analyses will give valuable insights on regional palaeoclimatic developments, enabling an improved contextualisation of the current climatic changes that severely affect ecosystems in the Alps.
The research project is funded by the uni:docs fellowship program (University of Vienna) and is considered a case study within the current discourse on the definition of the (Early) Anthropocene.
