Sedimentology and Chemostratigraphy of Upper Paleocene to Eocene strata in the Zagros Basin: Implications for sea-level fluctuations around the PETM interval

Paleocene/Eocene sections suggest a complex interplay between rising temperatures, sea-level fluctuations, plankton taxa extinction and diversification, and changes in the trophic resource regime for the PETM (Paleoecene-Eocene Thermal Maximum) interval.
To the achievement of investigating changing conditions at PETM boundary, a total of 374 samples have been taken from the predominantly shaly cyclic lower section part of the limestone-marl cycles.
Biostratigraphic age determination is based on calcareous nannoplankton using smear slides and 100x oil immersion light microscope.
The study area is situated in Zagros Basin (W-Iran) where sediments (Paleocene- Lower Eocene) were deposited in a deeper-water marine environment and consist of deep-water pelagic to hemipelagic shale, marl(stone) and limestone.
Hence, this project aims to identify and evaluate facies changes in this offshore environment, in particular around the Paleocene/Eocene boundary and the PETM interval. Originally, the sediments were deposited in the (closing) oceanic area of the Neo-Tethys.
