IGCP609 - new project on sea-level changes in a greenhouse climate

A new international project got funded by the Scientific Board of the International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) of UNESCO and IUGS (International Union of Geosciences) in February 2013. The five year project IGCP609 "Climate-environmental deteriorations during greenhouse phases: Causes and consequences of short-term Cretaceous sea-level changes" looks on causes and consequences of sea-level changes, and rates of sea-level rise during greenhouse climate phases.

Principal Investigator and leader of the project is Michael Wagreich, together with Silke Voigt (Frankfurt, Germany), Svetlana Zorina (Kazan, Russia), Xiumian Hu (Nanjing, China), M. Julleh Jalalur Rahman Dhaka, Bangladesh) and Ismail Omer Yilmaz (Ankara, Turkey). All in all, research groups from 26 countries have confirmed their participation in the project up to now.

UNESCO-IUGS IGCP projects are rather exclusive, only about 5 to 10 per year are granted. These projects build seed money to foster international cooperation, especially with developing countries. The kick-off meeting of IGCP609 will be in the beginning of September in Ankara, at the 9th International Symposium on the Cretaceous System.
