Guest professor Adriano Guido at our department

Dr. Adriano Guido from the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Calabria, Italy, stays with us in April to carry out the research project [BIOMICRO] - Biomarkers in Microbialites: Relevance to Carbonatogenesis and Astrobiology. He is here on a Post-Graduate Exchange Fellowship financed by the Calabria Region.

Dr. Adriano Guido, University of Calabria, Italy

The research concerns the micrite carbonatogenesis through selected cases in which well preserved microbialites dominate. The final aim is the recognition of the various metabolic processes which led to micrite precipitation. The biogeochemical characterization of autochthonous organic remains together with micromorphological observations will permit to characterize the microbial communities and to hypothesize the metabolic processes that lead to carbonatogenesis. The research should confirm the potentiality of biomarkers as proxy of the microbial metabolic activities that lead to micrite precipitation in time and space. Biomarker characterization in selected build-ups on the Earth could help to identify possible correlations between methanogenesis processes and Martian mounds. These correlations seem to be indicated by the recent discoveries of methane, carbonates and mounds on Mars. The evidence of non-methylotrophic methanogenesis could signify the presence of extraterrestrial form of life.

  • Ladinian-Carnian carbonate platforms of the Dolomite.
  • Messinian “Calcare di Base” Formation in Southern Italy.
  • Tortonian/Messinian Vermetid bioconstructions from Salento peninsula (Puglia, Italy).
  • Recent Serpulid bioconstruction growing in submerged cave from Plemmirio marine protected area (Sicily, Italy).
