EAGE Field Trip to the Alps

During the 78th EAGE (European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers) Conference & Exhibition 2016 "Efficient Use of Technology - Unlocking Potential" congress in Vienna, Godfrid Wessely and Michael Wagreich led an excursion with the theme "An Eastern Alpine Geology Transect" on May 30, 2016.

The field trip followed a geological transect through the easternmost parts of the Eastern Alps, including outcrops of the Rhenodanubian Flysch Zone, the Northern Calcareous Alps, and Neogene basins. Geological structures of the Alpine fold-and-thrust belt and the Vienna Basin were discussed. The photograph shows the participants standing at the cutting edge between the Vienna/Eisenstadt Basin and the Pannonian Basin at St. Margarethen discussing on flower structures and active tectonics.
